choosing a boudoir photographer

We get asked so many different questions when it comes to boudoir photography. The most commonly asked question, after what is boudoir photography, is: what is the difference between a fantastic boudoir photographer and a good photographer in the industry? There are many great boudoir photographers in South Africa, so making the choice of who is your photographer, becomes very difficult. Below are some tips to hopefully make the choice a little easier
Experience

Being passionate about boudoir is awesome, but how much experience does the photographer have? Photographing elegant and sophisticated boudoir, where the client's best features are highlighted and she not only looks amazing but feels fantastic too... is more difficult than you think. It takes a lot of work and practice to ensure that the lady's personality shines through in her images, that she is posed in the most flattering way and that the images are beautiful. Every lady is different, and we are not only talking about their figures, but their quirks and personality, as well. Therefore, it is vital that these are incorporated into your boudoir shoot, as they make you...who you are.

Posing
Most of us have no idea how to look good in photos... even models take direction from photographers to ensure they look fabulous, in their photos. So, be sure to ask the photographer if they will be assisting and directing you through the posing process. There are many little tips and tricks that boudoir photographers use when tweaking a pose, it's all about body language and making a photo believable. You want to look fabulous, but you also want the viewer of your photo to look at it, feel the passion and wonder what you were thinking. Often an experienced photographer will watch how you move and take note of your mannerisms, and incorporate those into drop dead gorgeous poses.

Passion
Being a boudoir photographer should be all about the passion... It should come through in their website,  portfolio and in the way they talk. It is not simply about money and taking sexy photos, it's about creating an experience for ladies that is a journey of self discovery and empowerment. Your photographer should want to help you celebrate your femininity, your curves, and beauty.

Location
Always be sure to ask the photographer, where the shoot will take place. It's important to know that your shoot will be in a private and safe location. Most boudoir photographers have a studio that you can use, but also offer the option of using a hotel or even your own home.

Style
When looking at a boudoir photographers portfolio, you should see a clearly defined style coming through. Remember, photographers are artists, so styles do change and develop as they get more experience, but generally it's not a drastic change. Their portfolio should show a variety of images of different women in different poses, but all with a similar feel or style. Boudoir is very personal... and there are many different ways of shooting it. Make sure you choose a photographer who's work you love and makes you feel excited about your shoot.
Post-production
The editing or post-production process of a photographer is a big part of their style. Some photographers prefer to do a lot of editing, whereas others prefer to only do a little light editing. Light editing normally includes softening of the skin and removing blemishes, without changing who you are. Make sure you ask about the photographers editing style, and if you are not sure, get them to show you a before and after edited photo. The femme fatale team believe boudoir photography is about celebrating who you are... we love natural images and do not want you to look drastically different from who you really are.

Packages
Most photographers include the full experience in their packages, and this normally includes hairstyling and make-up. Ensure the package you choose suits your needs for the shoot, and if the photographer is willing to be flexible with including different options. Talk to your photographer about the best way of displaying your images... be it a little black book, a canvas wall print or a folio box. Your photographer is in the best position to advise you on what will look the best
Privacy
Most ladies are concerned about their images being displayed on the internet. Although boudoir photographers generate business from sharing clients images, it is important to know if they will respect your privacy wishes. Discuss this with the photographer before you book and sign the contract. A professional boudoir photographer will always be respectful of your privacy

Comfort Level
Lastly and most importantly... you need to be comfortable with your photographer. There are both male and female boudoir photographers. Both have advantages, but it is important that you can relax and be comfortable with them. If you are totally stressed out, it will show in the photos and they will not meet your expectations. If you are unsure, ask to meet the photographer for a pre-shoot consultation, or ask to see previous clients testimonials.
We hope this helps you choose the right boudoir photographer for you and that your journey of empowerment and self love is as beautiful as you are.
