concept shoot - black & gold cupcake - part 2

Last week, we posted the first part of our Black and Gold concept shoot with the foxy Miss Roxy. This is the second part of the shoot, where we decided to add a red lip and some gold foil to the look.  A red lip is often used to add drama and sophistication to a look... And, we really love how it enhanced the black and gold eye makeup.

Once again we have to thank Makeup by Monique for the concept, and for the fabulous makeup, Roxy who is an awesome lady to work with, L'il Delights for the divine cupcakes and Fotacs for loaning us the Photon lighting to play with!

concept shoot - black & gold cupcake

There is no better way to spend a morning, than with beautiful ladies, fabulous makeup and delicious cupcakes! This is exactly what we did when we did our black and gold cupcake inspired photoshoot with the gorgeous Roxy, Makeup by Monique and L'il Delights.

When Monique asked us to partner with her on a concept shoot, we jumped at the opportunity.  We wanted to experiment with a beauty dish & our Photon Continuous Lighting, and Monique  wanted to try out her new gold palette of makeup... And that was how this gorgeous concept came about!  The look is sexy and sultry, it isn't your every day makeup but rather for a special occasion, themed party or to be the star of a fashion show!

We love how this stunning combination accentuates Roxy's beautiful features... and how her eyes totally pop in the photos.  We would like to thank our fabulous team for working so hard to put this amazing shoot together.... Monique your makeup is just too amazing for words, Roxy, you are just so beautiful & we love working with you and lastly to L'il Delights for the stunning black and gold cupcakes, that had us drooling throughout the shoot (and we totally ate them all at the end)!

concept shoot: rainbow cupcake - part 2

Last week we posted the first part of the stunning Chantelle Swart's (former Mrs South Africa) cupcake concept shoot.  In the second part of her shoot, Monique changed Chantelle's look completely. It went from bright rainbow colours to moody blues and purples... which we loved as much as the rainbow colours!

This stunning colour combination really made Chantelle's beautiful eyes pop!  Although this is not makeup that we would wear everyday, it certainly does accentuate her natural beauty.  We were very lucky to have had the most amazing team working with us on this concept shoot, and we would like to thank all of them for their hard work and dedication to making this concept come true!  Chantelle, you are gorgeous, and we loved working with you!  L'il Delights, your cupcakes were both beautiful and delicious and kept our energy levels up during the day!  Lastly to Monique, your makeup is fabulous and you really out did yourself on this shoot!

concept shoot: rainbow cupcake

What happens when you have the beautiful Chantelle Swart (former Mrs South Africa), a talented Makeup artist like Monique, a bright colour palette of makeup and delicious cupcakes from L'il Delights...all in our studio at once?  We go crazy of course!  With an array of bright funky colours at our disposal, we had the best fun in our studio towards the end of 2015!

The concept of the shoot was not to eat the cupcake, but to be the cupcake! And, oh boy, Monique sure did the most amazing makeup with bold splashes of colour.  Chantelle was really awesome to work with, such a beautiful lady in every way and we definitely are looking forward to working with her again!

gorgeous ms taryn - glamour shoot

Taryn, recently joined us for her glamour shoot, and would you believe this blonde bombshell always felt insecure about herself?

As Taryn sipped on her champagne and felt her nerves begin to calm down, she shared her life story with us. While this was happening, Monique worked her magic and produced fabulous airbrushed makeup and hair styling.

Taryn always avoiding the camera, was shy and lacked confidence but after working exceptionally hard for 3 years, she shed 40kgs!  She says: " I have worked so hard and shed plenty of tears and now after 33 years - for the first time in my life, and still with all my natural curves, I feel beautiful, have confidence and want to have special memories to remind me of my journey."

After her shoot, Taryn sent us the nicest of messages: "I just wanted to thank you all again for a truly amazing and memorable experience in studio yesterday. Monique, I never thought I could look that hot - ever - you are amazing and thank you for helping me look and feel just absolutely gorgeous. (I am still rocking my sex hair)
Chantal and Shelley, you both made me feel so comfortable and at ease the moment I arrived. Thanks for your patience and guiding me through all of it. It was honestly such fun and if I could do it again, I would do it in a heartbeat. I could not believe the photos I was seeing of myself, you are both so talented and I cannot wait to see them on screen.
You are an amazing team. Thanks for a very special afternoon xxx"

We think Taryn is absolutely gorgeous, this mom of one has no reason to avoid the camera!  It is really exciting for us to be sharing her glamour shoot, here is a peak at what we got up to in studio:

The outfits darling! Here you are encouraged to keep as much or as little as you would like on. gorgeous ms l

We met the gorgeous Ms L a few months ago, when she came to our studio for her boudoir shoot. She was doing the shoot as a surprise groom's gift for her prince charming.

Her nerves were high when she arrived, but they soon disappeared after a few sips of champagne. And, after Monique transformed her into a sexy goddess, that totally put her at ease. Ms L had a few special requests for her shoot, she wanted to incorporate a motorsport feel, as her hubby loves cars. It certainly was different and fun to add a remote control car into a boudoir shoot! Another special touch was adding her nautical wedding theme into a few images, and this added an extra level of fun and flirtiness to the shoot.

This amazing lady is smoking hot, her bubbly and fun nature, made this a day to remember for us all.  Miss L, you deserve your happily ever after. You are such a beautiful person in every way and we hope you never forget that.

tips for flawless make-up - products to clean make-up brushes

Most make-up brands have their own brush cleansers available, however, it is not necessary to spend a huge amount of money to keep your brushes clean and fresh. If you do not have any make-up brush cleanser, you can wash your brushes using water and mild baby shampoo, or use the recipe below for an awesome DIY cleanser...we just love!
Often using a store bought brush cleanser can often be easier, quicker and more convenient! They are also great for day to day cleaning. However, it is recommend that you give your brushes a 'deep' clean once a week.  Here are two amazing brush cleansers we recommend for daily use:
Picture
1. MAC Brush Cleanser
Like all other MAC products, this is fabulous. This is an alcohol-based cleaner, and is great for breaking down make-up residue that other brush cleaners often can not remove. This cleanser is really effective, easy to use, and is specifically formulated to prolong the life of your brushes. MAC is available at certain Edgars stores, or you can shop online. This cleanser retails for approximately R170 and we think it is well worth it.

Picture
2. Fresh in a Flash
This make-up brush cleanser is made for the awesome Rubybox team, that is based in Cape Town. It is very really quick and easy to use. All you do is spray it on your brush, wipe on a tissue and allow it to air-dry. We love how easily it fits into a make-up bag, so it's a must have for all ladies who travel a lot. At R69,95 it is reasonably priced and very effective. It is available online through the Rubybox website.

DIY make-up brush cleanser
For a really effective 'deep' clean of your brushes, this recipe is fabulous, especially as you probably have all of the ingredients lying around at home.
All you need is:
  • Extra virgin olive oil
  • White vinegar
  • Liquid dish washing soap
Mix equal parts of all three together, and gently work it into your brushes. Make sure to rinse properly afterwards and allow your brushes to air dry. The vinegar is a great disinfectant and removes all of the bacteria, while the soap removes the make-up residue and the olive oil helps to condition the bristles, making them soft and prolonging the life of your brushes.
Look and feel fabulous!

tips for flawless make-up - why should you clean your brushes?

Cleaning Make-up brusheswww.fierceandfashionable.com
We all know how important it is to have a regular cleansing routine for your skin. For example, washing your make-up off before going to bed allows your skin to breathe. But did you know it is also very important to clean your make-up brushes? Like your skin, make-up brushes also get clogged up. Once your brush is like this, it is not good for your skin nor is it good for the brush.

Why is cleaning your make-up brushes so important?
  • Make-up brushes are awesome for picking up product and blending it, but it means they are also good at picking up the oil, dead skin and bacteria that maybe on your skin. Your brushes can become a place where bacteria can breed, causing skin problems like acne, blemishes and infections.
  • Brushes last longer if they are cleaned regularly and in the proper way.
  • When applying make-up, you want the exact colour you are applying, so a dirty brush with remnants of yesterday's colour is going to introduce different colours and the blending won't look how you are expecting it to. A clean brush means perfect colour.
How often should you clean your brushes?
  • Brushes that come in contact with the eyes or mouth (eyeliner or lipstick brushes) should be cleaned every time you use them, as bacteria like moist areas to breed.
  • If you have problem or oily skin, its best to clean your brushes after every use, but if you don't, then once a week or every two weeks is sufficient.
Keep an eye out for future blog posts on the best make-up brush cleaning products and how to clean your brushes correctly.
Look and feel fabulous!

what is bridal boudoir?

Boudoir photography is a sexy trend which is becoming increasingly popular among ladies of all ages. In addition, when a boudoir shoot is done tastefully with the right photographer, it is beautiful, sensual and elegant.

We are photographing more and more brides, this is probably because, this sensual photo-shoot makes the perfect, special and intimate gift for their groom. This type of photo-shoot is called a bridal boudoir.

How does bridal boudoir differ from a normal boudoir shoot?
There isn't a huge difference, as we always ask our ladies to bring along a selection of lingerie and outfits to their photo-shoot. However, we encourage our brides to bring their wedding elements with, such as their bridal jewellery, garter, white or bridal lingerie, wedding shoes, flowers and of course their veil.

Can I still do my shoot if I do not have all my bridal elements yet?
Of course! The femme fatale studio is well equipped with bridal props if you do not have everything. We have the most gorgeous and beautiful cathedral length veil that was custom made for us by our dear friend and recommended wedding dress & accessory supplier By Ligita. We also have a selection of jewellery, bridal corsets, garters, etc.

When should I do my bridal boudoir photo-shoot?
We recommend you do your photo-shoot at least 6 weeks before your wedding. That gives us enough time to edit the images beautifully and have your gorgeous boudoir album printed and delivered to you before your wedding day.

What does bridal boudoir look like?
We just love doing bridal boudoir, as it is soft, sensual and really beautiful. One of our favourite things to do is implied nude. This is where we use your or our veil strategically to cover all the important places, but leave a lot to the imagination.

Below is a few images from Miss Kamzisto's bridal boudoir photo-shoot. These will give you an idea of what to expect.

A big thank you to Monique for the beautiful make-up, and Miss Kamzisto for allowing us to use her gorgeous images and for being such an amazing lady to work with!

tips for flawless make-up - tools for applying foundation

Foundation is generally the first makeup product we apply, and acts as a base for all of the other products we use to create the perfect look.  It is important that you use the correct tools, and the finger tips are definitely the wrong way to apply foundation.  Using our finger tips can introduce bacteria on to our skin and gives a streaky uneven finish.

To help our lovely femme fatale ladies out with which tool is best, we decided to put some information together about the best foundation applying tools.
  • The Flat Foundation Brush
PictureFlat Foundation Brush
The flat foundation brush is usually made of synthetic fibres and has a slightly rounded, flat tip.  This is best used in a circular motion, starting with sculpting from the cheeks and moving up to the hairline.  This brush glides beautifully over your skin allowing you to blend liquid foundation easily, creating a flawless look.

  • The Stippling Foundation Brush
Picture
Stippling Foundation Brush
The stippling foundation brush is a duo fibre brush, and is the best option for full coverage.  They are made up of two different hair types and have two different lengths of bristles. It is specifically designed to stipple (or pat) the foundation or concealer on to your skin as it has a large flat head.  The technique of stippling has become incredibly popular as it gives a beautiful streak free and natural look to foundation.  It allows you to apply products over each other and is perfect for applying foundation over your concealer.
  • Makeup sponges
Foundation sponges come in a variety of shapes and sizes, although the most common are the white triangular makeup sponges and the pink egg shaped beauty blenders.  The makeup sponges are cheap and are designed to be disposable, whereas the beauty blenders are a bit more expensive and can be washed and reused.

Generally the sponges are used damp, and after the foundation has been applied to the skin with a brush, to remove any streaks.  The design allows you to reach difficult areas like around the eyes and by the nose to give an overall smooth foundation that looks natural too.

tips for flawless make-up - choosing the right make-up brushes

When it comes to applying Make-up, sometimes we forget that the tools we use are probably the most important assets in our Make-up bag. Choosing the correct make-up brushes are an investment as they do have a relatively long life span, if cared for properly. Good quality brushes can help you achieve great flawless make-up with very little effort.
Makeup brushes - Image from beautytips4her.comMakeup brushes from beautytips4her.com
So how do you choose the right brushes?
Well most say that the brand names, like MAC are the best, but many of the smaller brand names, or even the ones you can purchase at pharmacies like Dis-Chem and Clicks or a make-up store, are just as good and are a bit more affordable.

The most important things to think about when choosing make-up brushes is:
  • The size
  • What they are made of
  • firmness of the bristles

Remember there are different sizes and shapes for a reason, each one has their own function. Therefore, one make-up brush is not sufficient for every application.

PictureBrushes by makeupforgeneration.blogspot.com
Brushes are made with different types of hair (bristles), you get natural hair, real hair, fake hair (plastic) or synthetic.  The real or natural hair brushes, tend to be a bit more expensive but they are awesome for dry make-up, like powder and blush. Synthetic brushes on the other hand are great for wet make-up, like foundation, as they do not stick or clog up.

Brushes made with the correct materials and that are good quality will not lose bristles, and will ensure a beautiful finish as they do not stick or snag on your skin.

If you are unsure, or need advice on which brushes to buy, have a chat to one of our fabulous Make-up Artists, Monique or Shandre.  They are both very skilled at make-up application and do offer
courses on how to apply make-up. They often advise our ladies on the best products to purchase for their skin type and colouring.

A big thank you to Monique and Shandre, who are always fantastic with the most amazing make-up and hair styling they do for our ladies. They also assist us with the information for the make-up blog's.
We did find a fabulous website which also has some great hints and tips for make-up application: www.bestmakeupbrushesguide.org, its definitely worth a visit.

sultry mrs a

Mrs A arrived at the studio super excited for her shoot but naturally also a little nervous...she couldn't believe she was finally doing her boudoir shoot. She brought a bag full of the most incredible and beautiful lingerie and heels...we were drooling and couldn't wait to get her in them.

Her nerves soon vanished once Monique started her magic...gorgeous make-up was on the cards for Mrs A. Monique didn't only make her look fabulous but feel fabulous as well.

Mrs A is not only a natural beauty, she also has this smouldering sultry look which is so intense...just blew us away! She showed us how even just a simple plain white T-shirt can look sexy. This mom of one (almost two as we were excited to learn that she is expecting her second baby soon!) is totally fabulous! Once we started shooting...we didn't want to stop! Mrs A's hubby was totally gob-smacked by how gorgeous she looked, can you blame him...she is smoking!

a little bit of spoiling ....

At femme fatale, we believe every woman needs a little bit of spoiling every now and then.  So we subscribed to Rubybox to see what its all about.  Its pretty easy to do, they ask you some questions about your skin type, hair and normal beauty regime, and then every month a beautifully packaged box, containing a selection of beauty products (some full size and some sample size) arrives at your door.

August was the first month we had subscribed so you can just imagine how excited we were to receive the email saying it would be delivered the next day.  It took all of our self control to take our time opening it so we could take some pictures to share with you.

The August box had a few really amazing things inside, we have used them all and wow, we love them all!  This is what we received:

  • Africology Body Butter - This is wonderful, it really helped with our dry winter skin and smells very yummy!
  • Bee Natural Rich Rehydrating Face Balm - Another winner, although we tend to use it more for our lips than our faces
  • Rubybox Beauty Smooch Stick (Latte Limbo) - This has to be the best lipstick ever!  Its moisturising and stays put for most of the day
  • REN Resurfacing AHA Concentrate - As we are not fans of chemical peels, this is the next best option.  Its an enzymatic exfoliator that you apply at night, its gentle and made a huge difference to our skin by the next morning.
  • Dual Sharpener - A handy gadget that we love.  It has both a large and small sharpener so its a fabulous addition to our makeup box

We do recommend the Rubybox to all our ladies ... its definitely worth the R169,00 a month, so go spoil yourself!
